CBS News: Steven Downs was sentenced to 75 years in prison for the rape and murder of Sophie Sergie at an Alaska college dorm in 1993. Sergie’s murder went unsolved for more than two decades in Fairbanks until investigators used genealogical DNA tracing to narrow down their leads to Downs, who was arrested in 2019 while living in Maine.
USA Today: 47 deputies with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in California have been stripped of their weapons and arrest powers after failing their psychological exams. The decision to relieve the deputies of their duties comes after the Sheriff’s Office conducted an internal audit of personnel psychological examinations beginning from January 2016 to the present. The Office hopes to have all deputies back to full status in the next two months.

Fox31: The bomb squad for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office disabled a pipe bomb behind a Safeway in Littleton Tuesday afternoon. Crews were called out to the store near Mineral and Broadway around 1 p.m. and disabled the device two hours later. An investigation is underway to determine who left the bomb there.

9News: Two suspects face charges after they reportedly were planning an attack against Steamboat Springs High School. Police say they received a Safe2Tell complaint through 911 Monday night, which referenced a photo of a man holding what looked to be an AR-style rifle along with a threatening caption. SSPD arrested 18-year-old Zachery Durham and 19-year-old Damion Rhodes (student). Rhodes was found loading a magazine for what looked to a rifle in the school parking lot. Officers found the suspects in possession with an airsoft gun in their car, as well as several swords.

9News: The governments of the United Kingdom and New Zealand are seeking answers in the death of Christian Glass. The 22-year-old man was a citizen of both nations, as well as the U.S. Recently released body cam video showed a Clear Creek County Sheriff’s deputy shoot Glass with bean bag rounds and a Taser during an encounter near Silver Plume back in June before he was shot and killed. Glass was holding a knife while locked in his car.

Fox31: Thornton Police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with an attempted abduction outside of a school last week. Officers say Diego Gettler was turned in by his parents, who called police after they recognized surveillance photos of him. According to investigators, Gettler tried to abduct a girl outside STEM Launch after her mom had dropped her off.
AURORA
Denver7: The two finalists to become the next Aurora Police chief have arrived for a series of interviews with city leaders and community members. David Franklin and Scott Ebner are both from out of state. Both men will talk with the City Council and Mayor Mike Coffman today. Not everyone is happy with the choices. The Aurora Police Oversight Committee wants the process to start over, saying that committee members were shut out of the process.
Denver Post: A car theft suspect who ran from Aurora Police and pointed a gun at officers shot and killed himself. Police initially reported that 31-year-old Anthony Edwards was shot by officers near Alameda and Galena on Saturday after a foot chase. Officers did shoot at Edwards when they saw him raise a weapon, but investigators say the suspect shot himself in the head at the same time.

Denver7: A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after his patrol SUV was struck by a suspected drunk driver. The crash happened late Monday night in Lone Tree near Lincoln and Havana while the deputy was parked on the shoulder waiting for a tow truck to take away another car he had impounded. The impact of the collision pushed the deputy’s SUV and the suspect’s truck into the road. The deputy managed to get out, pull the suspect out of his seat and away of danger.

Denver7: CU leaders tried to address concerns from students and members of the surrounding community about the handling of sexual assault cases. The meeting comes after the university formed a new task force to address issues related to sexual misconduct on campus. A 2021 survey showed most assaults happened to undergraduate women in their first year, with those incidents mostly occurring at a Greek chapter house.
